Chris Kringle wants your PC dead.
New virus alert, set to go off Dec. 25 - already starting
to wreak havoc in a Christmas In Summer outbreak in Asia.
It is called Win32.Kriz and it is a vicious new strain of
malicious coding; it can overwrite BIOS and Kill CMOS,
causing your system not to be bootable.

It is polymorphic - so once it infects, it changes its code
enough to avoid detection. It becomes harder to detect the
more it mutates itself. There is always a slim chance a bug
in the code could make it nullify itself - but don't count on it.

The virus is loosely based on the CIH and Chernobyl virus.
The code comes up with anti-Christian sentiments on an infected
PCs screen, then you can safely bet your PC is toast.

Be sure to update your virus profiles, before faced with an outbreak.

BUG WATCH
Network Associates can cause turmoil to your email.
If you are running Groupshield for Outlook and simultaneously
running a Network Associates anti-virus product, your email
could end up on a milk carton. That's right your email gets
deleted. Although it is a mildly rare bug, you should be aware
there are currently no fixes available.

Back Orifice 2000 released ... The Cleaner cleans it up.

Portland, Oregon... July 13, 1999 -- MooSoft Development is proud to
announce full programmatic removal of Back Orifice 2000 infections with
their award-winning software, The Cleaner, version 2.1.  Registered users can update both their Trojan Definition Files and the scan engine by simply pressing the "Check for Update" button.  A blue warning light blinks every 10 days as a reminder.

THE CULPRIT:

Back Orifice 2000 -- also known as "BO2K" -- is a malicious Trojan Horse program that allows others to remotely access an unsuspecting user's computer.  The program can be disguised in many forms on the internet, and is often received and installed as a "joke.exe" file.  Once installed, the Trojan allows it's senders to access and manipulate the victim's computer while connected to the internet.  Among other things, perpetrators can open, view, delete, and change files; access screen-saver passwords; send keystrokes to the remote computer; shut the computer down; or spy on the activities of the victim.

BO2K was released Saturday, July 10th, 1999 at the DefCon VII computer show in Los Vegas -- an eclectic gathering of techies from varied backgrounds: programmers of malicious code, computer security experts, law enforcement officials, and teenage hacker wannabes who use the malicious software written by the programmers.

Written by the infamous "Cult of the Dead Cow," a shadowy internet community of hacker programmers, BO2K is a follow-up to  last year's hit single, Back Orifice.  Claiming they wrote the program only to point out the vulnerabilities in the Windows operating systems, the authors are forced to concede the high levels of corporate expense caused by
the release of their software.

Unlike the previous version, which ran only on Windows 95/98, BO2K works on Windows NT, making it even more dangerous to the corporate world.  In addition, the authors have released the source code for BO2K on the internet, which makes it likely that many variations of the Trojan will emerge.

Marine Animal Rescue Page Goes Online
July 20, 1999 – David Bard Imaging is pleased to announce the completion of work on an updated web site for MAR3INE (Marine Animal Rescue, Rehabilitation and Return Into the Natural Environment) and the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur. The work began in April of this year and focused on revamping the site’s look, as well as making the pages more user-friendly and informative.

The primary work of the two organizations is the treatment and return to the wild of rescued sick and injured California Sea Lions, Northern Elephant Seals, Northern Fur Seals and Harbor Seals. “One of the real challenges,” says David Bard, who has also been a volunteer at the Care Center since 1996,  “was that we wanted to incorporate unique looks for two entities – MAR3INE and the Marine Mammal Care Center – and still have a site that was easy to navigate and understand.

We also wanted to provide a resource where visitors could find answers to some of the questions we commonly get at the Care Center.” This was accomplished in part by placing a navigation bar with frequently asked questions down the left side of the Care Center pages. The links serve to set the Care Center aspects of the site apart from those of MAR3INE, as well as adding content to the pages.

Planned future additions include a section geared toward children. “There’s so much we’ll be able to do,” says David. “The Internet is a perfect forum for this type of site. It provides all the tools for interactivity that we need.” The updated site can be seen at www.mar3ine.org.

ExploreZip worm invades Net ...
Cleaner to the rescue

The new infection, called the ExploreZip, is a new auto-spamming worm which -- unlike Melissa and other previous auto-spamming malicious code -- contains a damaging payload.  When executed, TROJ_EXPLORE.ZIP utilizes the MAPI command to access Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange, and automatically replies and sends itself out to any incoming email message.

It then searches for hard drives c: through z:, selects a series of files and destroys them by making them 0 bytes long. This can result in unrecoverable data. The worm emails itself out as an attachment with the filename "zipped_files.exe". The body of the email message may also contain the following text:

Hi [Recipient Name]!
I received your email and I shall send you a reply ASAP.
Till then, take a look at the attached zipped docs.
bye

The worm will also search the network, remotely install itself on other networked computers and delete files on those computers, even if their virus protection is already updated.

Computer security experts have said ExploreZip has doubled overnight and has already shown up on tens of thousands of computers in the United States, France and Germany.  It is believed the worm originated in Israel.

MooSoft Development is proud to have integrated full detection/removal of ExploreZip into The Cleaner.

Committed to on-going Trojan research, MooSoft Development scours the internet for the latest hazards.  The Cleaner currently detects 127 Trojans on the internet, with new Trojans added weekly.  Said Daniel Otis, chief developer for MooSoft Development:  "If a new Trojan is out there, we'll
find it fast ... we can usually get it analyzed, tested, and incorporated into our definition files within a week."

The Cleaner's unique scan engine -- one of the fastest in the industry -- searches your hard drive at average speeds up to 50 files per second. Users can scan all hard drives or just a selected set of files.  Also added to this latest build is the ability to update the scan engine over directly from the MooSoft Server.  When users press the "Check for Update" button,
The Cleaner now updates the Trojan definition file and the program itself.

As these new threats to internet security continue to evolve, "Worms" and "Trojan Horses" are continuing to receive major press on the large news sites.  For more information about The Cleaner and links to download a free trial version, visit the MooSoft Web page at:

Other report:

As a valued Staples.com customer, we want you to be aware of the new and extremely destructive virus that hit the web yesterday called W32/ExploreZip.

WHAT IT IS:

The "Worm" virus is being distributed as an attachment via email.  If you receive an email that looks similar to this text below - delete it immediately!

Hi (last name of recipient), !
I received your email and I shall send you a reply ASAP.
Till then, take a look at the attached zipped docs.
                 Sincerely
          (last name of sender)

A file named "zipped_files.exe" will be attached to the message - this is the virus!  DO NOT OPEN OR RUN THIS FILE!!  Delete the email immediately.  If the attachment is opened, the virus will become active, and will then perform two functions.  First, the virus attempts to create a new email message similar to the message above, and will send itself to the people listed in your email address book.  Secondly, users who run this attachment will then be presented with this fake error message:

"Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If this
file is part of a ZIP format backup set, insert the last disk of the
backup set and try again. Please press F1 for help."
The activated virus then searches your local hard drive for the
following file types, and when found will delete them: .c, .cpp, .asm,
..doc, .xls, .ppt
