FBI Uses Internet to stop Car Theft Rings

By: The Editor

The FBI is using a project that connects law enforcement agencies together, not only here but in other countries as well. The project uses the Vehicle File Access portal from the National Crime Information Center.

Since 1.5 Million cars are stolen each year, with at least 200,000 of which being shipped overseas, the FBI wants the tracking information available everywhere.

A global communications project is a very powerful tool when it comes to checking car information by foreign police agencies.

The project started out by interfacing the Vehicle File Project to Interpol which is being extended to other countries and used domestically.

"The next version of the project will be accessible from a web browser based system, which will allow for queries to be made quickly through the stolen vehicle database. The new version will also include many more languages and allow for information to be accessed within seconds; an improvement over the current access time of hours to days." -I.W.

Projects are ongoing in Belize, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Poland. And in the next few months: Guatemala, Latvia, Lithuania and the Ukraine. The project is expected to cost a few thousand per country.

The biggest feat has been the cooperation of the other countries to share their data/networks.
